The story

The German surname is a derivative of the verb gaumen (‘to protect, to defend; to care for’), a term now limited to Switzerland. This verb in turn comes from Middle High German goumen, from Old High German goumen, from Proto-Germanic *gaumijaną (‘to heed, notice, observe, keep’). The verb is ultimately a cognate of the obsolete English verb yeme (‘to observe, to pay attention’).

Today it means
