Lineage

  1. Biblical Hebrewc. 1000–200 BCEיְהוֹשֻׁעַYehoshúa'
  2. Englishearliest quotation 1611Joshua

Earliest quotation: 1611, The Holy Bible, London: […] Robert Barker: “So Joshua took the whole land, according to all…”

The story

From Biblical Hebrew יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yehoshúa'), perhaps from הוֹשֵׁעַ (Hoshéa') with addition of יהוה (YHWH, “Yahweh”), thus meaning "Yahweh is salvation". The Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible and the Greek New Testament consistently render the two Hebrew names Yehoshúa' (whence Joshua) and Yeshúa' (whence Jeshua) into Koine Greek as Iēsoûs (whence Jesus).

Today it means

name The sixth book of the Old Testament of the Bible, and a book of the Tanakh.

Language periods are conventional ranges, not dates for this word.
