The story

The placename is interpreted to mean "above the wall," from sur (‘above’) (a derivative of Latin supra (‘above’)) + meir (‘wall’) (from Latin murus). There is no corresponding Swiss German name, which instead uses Mittelbünden.

Today it means

name A dialect of the Romansch language, spoken in the canton of Grisons, especially in the region of Surmeir, Switzerland.

Language periods are conventional ranges, not dates for this word.
